CPAP backup power
Best portable power station for CPAP
Every unit below has enough stored energy and inverter output, by its own Amazon listing, to carry a CPAP machine through the night. They're ordered by our Bench Rating, with nightly runtime worked out from each unit's capacity.
- CPAP draw, humidifier off
- ~40 W
- With heated humidifier
- ~90 W
- Night length assumed
- 8 hours
Runtime estimates assume 85% inverter efficiency. Run a CPAP only from a pure sine wave outlet or the machine's own DC cord, and treat this page as buying guidance rather than medical advice — check your machine's manual and talk to your provider about backup power.

Before you buy
What it takes to run a CPAP overnight
The numbers that decide whether a unit gets you through the night.
What size portable power station do I need for a CPAP?
Most CPAP machines draw about 40 watts with the heated humidifier off and around 90 watts with it on. Over an 8-hour night that works out to roughly 320 Wh without the humidifier and about 720 Wh with it, so a 500 Wh unit covers one humidifier-free night and 1,000 Wh or more is a safer choice for multi-night trips.
How many nights will a power station run my CPAP?
Divide usable capacity by the nightly energy use: at about 85% inverter efficiency a 1,000 Wh unit gives roughly 2.6 nights with the humidifier off, or about 1.2 nights with it on. Turning off the heated humidifier and heated tubing is the single biggest way to stretch runtime.
Do I need a pure sine wave inverter for a CPAP?
Yes. CPAP machines are sensitive electronics and should be run from a pure sine wave AC outlet, or from the machine's own DC cord. Check the listing or manufacturer specification before you rely on a unit; where a listing does not state its inverter type, we say so rather than assume it.
Is it more efficient to use the DC output instead of the AC outlet?
It is. Running a CPAP from a 12V DC socket with the manufacturer's DC cord skips the inverter losses and can add roughly 10–15% more runtime. Never use a generic car adapter that the CPAP maker has not approved.
Can I recharge a power station overnight while the CPAP runs?
Most units pass power through while charging, so a solar panel during the day keeps a CPAP going indefinitely at a campsite or through a long outage. Check each product page for its stated solar input.
